Please try the attached patch. I've tested it on Snow Leopard with Xcode 4.2. I have not tested it on Lion or on Snow Leopard with an older version of Xcode.

It builds successfully in Snow Leopard with Xcode 3.2.6 (and using the default C compiler, i.e., no configure.compiler override).
