Hi
would it be possible to have the variant +openmpi set on by default ? this way all boost libraries would be available like for example in Debian.
attached the (trivial) patch for that.

The problem is that openmpi doesn't just pull in a library, it installs openmpi as well, which is rather large.
I'd turn the question around and say "why not just add the variant to your ${prefix}/etc/macports/variants.conf file?
I understand why you're asking, but then you need to ask "why not add python as a default variant"... and it keeps getting bigger...
