Sounds like there may be a problem with MacPorts itself; try installing ​from the DMG and see if that fixes it.

    11I have a mac 10.5.8, intel core 2 duo processor.
    22When I try running "port info gnuplot", or "port install gnuplot" I get the following error.

    34Unable to open port: invalid command name "ui_channels".
     5}}}
    46This doesn't just happen with gnuplot.
    57When I try "port info tree", I get the same error.
