Failed Initialization and Failed port extract

I keep attempting to install a port that is local and it gives me the error of: Error: /opt/local/bin/port: Failed to initialize MacPorts, Port extract failed: tar: Error opening archive: Failed to open '/Users/jonathan/Users/jonathan/ports'

It seemed to duplicate the Users/jonathan part of the code and i haven't been able to figure out why. i think that might be the problem because i have talked to people who were able to get the same port running. Some help would be appreciated.
