    6 is a specific addition that works only with autotools.
     6is not recognized by meson.

    8 now that the build uses meson instead, that part is no longer useful, and in fact, causes an error in meson when it is unrecognized.
     8I'm not sure if it is still needed at all, but if so, it will have to be an environment variable, not a configure argument.
