    1 if base used gnutar with no path set, on older systems at least, it would use the first one in the path...then a newer tar would be used just by putting a dep on gnutar for extract.
     1You're probably right, but using a newer tar if it exists is a trivially simple fix that works.

    5 Or have base look specifically for gnutar in the prefix first, on older systems at least, and fall back to /usr/bin/ if that doesn't exist, if that feels more reproducible.

    7 All other fixes seem unlikely to happen to me, but you never know what kind of effort people might be motivated to come up with. I won't be doing them, but others might get energetic.
