Works for me, you probably have a corrupt file. Run the following command and try again.

sudo port clean --all rb-rubygems

Strange. Considering this is a virginal install. And only the second port installed.

Fresh format/install/update of MacOS X 10.4.11 Then install MacPorts.org

sudo port -d selfupdate

nothing to update

sudo port install ruby

success

sudo port install rb-rubygems

error checksum

Cleaning did not resolve. Every install attempt gave bad checksum error. So I gave up and had ruby install newer 1.3.5 manually from rubyforge.org

Of course, several ports later the install of rb-rubygems will pass the checksums.

Very Weird.
