pkgconfig activation failure — at Version 1

It seems my system with it's present settings is unable to install gtk2 

sudo port install gtk2 +x11 +universal does install the following:
The following ports are currently installed:
  autoconf @2.65_1 (active)
  automake @1.11.1_0+universal (active)
  expat @2.0.1_0+universal (active)
  gettext @0.17_4+universal (active)
  gperf @3.0.4_0+universal (active)
  help2man @1.37.1_1+universal (active)

  libtool @2.2.6b_1+darwin+universal (active)
  m4 @1.4.14_0+universal (active)
  ncurses @5.7_0+darwin_10+universal (active)
  ncursesw @5.7_0+darwin_10+universal (active)
  p5-locale-gettext @1.05_2+universal (active)
  perl5 @5.8.9_0 (active)
  perl5.8 @5.8.9_3+universal (active)
  pkgconfig @0.23_1+universal

however finally fails. Where am I going wrong? I've uninstalled all ports and tried to reinstall to no avail. XCode 3.2.1 and X11(XQuartz 2.3.4 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple45)) are installed on my system.
