Replying to bwoods@…:

checking for install user... 1338122810
checking for install group... 1202617992

These are astronomically high user and group numbers. For comparison, the first user account created on Mac OS X has the user number 501. Also, usually MacPorts outputs the user and group names here (e.g. "root" and "admin"), not numbers. Do you have any explanation for why MacPorts is using these high numbers instead? Do these numbers mean anything to you? What is the value of the "macportsuser" setting in your macports.conf? Did you install this MacPorts from source, and if so, what if anything did you supply for the configure arguments --with-install-user, --with-install-group, --with-macports-user? How many user accounts are on this computer? Is there a network account server involved? Anything else unusual about this system that you can tell us? Has selfupdate ever worked before?

Apparently macports' prefix is owned by a nonexistent user and group on your machine. Try chowning it to something valid.

I tried chown-ing recursively from the /opt directory to both root and my local username to no avail.

The machine I am using is part of a corporate network, but the accounts are created locally. After the accounts are created, IS changes the user id number to match the company unix accounts so there are no problems on the NAS servers. Other than that, the numbers mean nothing to me. With that said, they said they re-chowned everything and the numbers would have been changed before macports was installed.

The macportsuser field appears to be commented out but would otherwise be root. I installed from a downloaded image, not source.

As for accounts, there are a total of 3: myself, an IS Admin, and a guest.

This install is only about 2 months old, so I am not sure whether or not selfupdate has worked before on this computer. I know I had previously run selfupdate, but don't explicitly remember applying a new version.

Other relevant info: it is encrypted with PGP, although since before macports was installed.
