it would be nice if portsharepath (/opt/localshare/darwinports by default) were a configurable location in ports.conf, this would allow decoupling of portsharepath from the prefix when desired. The patch adding this is trivial (attached).

Hey Daniel! Out of discussion on portmgr@ it has been agreed that this change is not desired for DP, as it would give place for furthure splattering of our installation through out the system (we already install stuff into ${prefix}, ${x11prefix}, /Library and /Applications/DarwinPorts, among other places).
I'm going to leave this bug as new, however, just in case you wish to bring the matter to dp@'s attention for a wider audience to weigh in with opinions, which I would encourage you to do.

The attached patch was rejected back when it was proposed and the matter was not brought up again, closing ticket therefore.
