X apps installed in German

I am an american xpact currently in Germany. I set the language on my mac to English, however any X app I install such as gftp or pidgin are in German. I suppose this is because my IP is German. I cannot find any documentation online to change the language settings.

I am not aware of any ports choosing their interface language based on the country your IP is in. Are you sure you haven't set the LANG environment variable to a German locale somewhere?

I did not modify anything when installing macports. Did a default install. If German is set in some environment variable, do you know where that would be?

Check by running locale in the terminal.

After setting the LANG var export LANG="en_US.UTF-8" the X apps are now in English.

In case someone else arrives here:

For Mac OS-X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) the local (region) setting can be found here:
 Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Language & Text -> Formats -> Region

For older Mac versions:
 Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> International -> Formats -> Region
