maybe gimp is unable to open a new X11 window?

Then it doesn't sound like a MacPorts-specific problem, and you should report it to the developers of Gimp instead.

given that 1) Gimp works fine on linux 2) Gimp is not officially supporting OSX 3) Gimp installed on a mac with macports fails to function correctly I don't see how this could be anything but a macports problem, sure other people who port might have the same problem but that's no reason for gimp to do anything about it.
