wine fails to install because libpng does not build

I'm trying to install wine but I keep getting this error message 

--->  Computing dependencies for wine
Error: Cannot install wine for the arch(s) 'i386' because
Error: its dependency libpng does not build for the required arch(s) by default
Error: and does not have a universal variant.
Error: Unable to execute port: architecture mismatch

I've searched around on trac but nothing seems to fix the problem. anyone have any ideas?

Duplicate of #35344. Manually install the affected ports with the +universal variant.
