Could you please confirm that you are running Xcode 5.0.1 including updated command line tools?

Well, I'm running Xcode 5.0.1 for sure. Running "xcode-select --install" fails with a message saying the software isn't currently available, but I did download a .dmg from developer.apple.com/downloads labelled as "Command Line Tools (OS X Mavericks) - Late October 2013" released Oct 22, 2013 (and installed the pkg in it), and there isn't a "Command Line Tools" entry pending in the Downloads section of Xcode's preferences.

I got gperf to install using a fresh MacPorts intallation. I'm guessing the problem was due to trying to build gperf using un-updated MacPorts tools (gcc?). Too late now, but I suspect I would've been able to get it to install properly simply by removing MacPorts installation prefix from PATH.

Also got everything working after a fresh MacPorts installation.
