Sorry for being dense, but I am unable to find a way to modify the CC field.

Maintainer here. Lots of errors like: 

:info:configure config.status: creating tools/Makefile
1241	:info:configure dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libreadline.6.dylib
1242	:info:configure   Referenced from: /opt/local/bin/gawk
1243	:info:configure   Reason: image not found

It looks like gawk is broken. Can you update/upgrade and try again? 

sudo port selfupdate
sudo port upgrade outdated

Good catch! I had to actually clean and install gawk, and then everything compiled. Thank you!!!
