I did a $ sudo port selfupdate and a $ sudo port clean --all libnetpbm - but the problem the OP described is not gone with libnetpbm @10.84.01 on my 10.5.8 Powerbook G4:

It didn't work for me either. I think perhaps the author missed another strndup or two somewhere in the code.
