you might get this to build in this nonstandard way, by modifying the portfile or the build files directly as per this:

https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/blob/80f4d4019c7adcd98fc9ebb9646cb581dcbeea6c/lang/python310/Portfile#L177

It would take some tweaking, but is probably possible.

I think Josh will just close this ticket, but will leave it for him to decide.

I have tried to do that with build files (for ppc+ppc64), and while it worked for python27, it failed for python38 and later. Specifically, while build itself completes, modules fail to function.

I addressed that here: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/50821#comment:9 And adding legacysupport 1.0 didn’t solve the problem either.

the fix for python27 was trivially simple, and is quite different than the python3s.

your path forward, should you care to continue exploring, would be as I mentioned here 64449#comment:4

essentially, the universal build of python3.x in macports is largely driven by the portfile, and a ppc64 pathway is so uncommon that the logic would appear to need to be tweaked to accomodate that.

I did that in build files via patches. I used BBEdit multi-file search on source code, found all instances on this sort and added ppc64 in a way similar to how x86_64 is added there. In result python38–310 built for me as universal, but some modules failed to work. That is where I got stuck.

I will post specific diff files once I am back to office (they are on Quad locally), if you could take a look.

OK, that sounds like progress. Well done.

We have found modules in python do fail to build at times on certain older or non-standard systems, especially the c interface modules I recall. So that is not a complete surprise.

By the way how to patch files inside .whl? Like for example: Python-3.8.12/Lib/ensurepip/_bundled/pip-21.1.1-py3-none-any.whl/pip/_vendor/packaging/tags.py I can see this file in BBEdit, but if I try cd to there or cp -p directly, it fails, I get this error:

Sergey-Fedorovs-Mac-mini:Lib svacchanda$ cd /Users/svacchanda/Documents/Python-3.8.12/Lib/ensurepip/_bundled/pip-21.1.1-py3-none-any.whl/pip/_vendor/packaging
-bash: cd: /Users/svacchanda/Documents/Python-3.8.12/Lib/ensurepip/_bundled/pip-21.1.1-py3-none-any.whl/pip/_vendor/packaging: Not a directory

So I can edit the original file, but dunno how to generate a patch with diff.

FWIW, python39 (python39-3.9.10_0.darwin_9.ppc.tbz2) installed successfully on my G5 today using port selfupdate. First time successful in months.

For ppc32? This is a bit strange, I never had issues with installing any python as ppc32 on 10.5.8 PPC.

Sorry, I misled you. I was looking at the wrong G5 - one that always succeeded as you say. On the other I had messed with the configuration trying to install pyobjc. This too installed perfectly with a reinstall & clean.
