Description

I'm trying to connect to your RocketChat instance https://chat.macports.org/ but after granting access via GitHub it only says "Internal server error". It makes no difference if I use the app or Safari. A user from IRC also verified that they are getting the same error. The GitHub authorization itself seems to work as I can see it in my GitHub profile.

Unfortunately the RocketChat instance is already broken for a while. Some previous update procedures left the database in a state that @g5pw was unable to get to work again.

Didn't we eventually think about starting from a fresh database although we would lose all the history?

I just wanted to point out that I believe what most users need is not specifically RocketChat, but any chat system that is not as exclusive as IRC. Realistically, IRC is only practical for people who can afford access to a computer than runs and has internet access 24/7. If I ask a question on IRC, I must stay connected until an answer arrives, which may take a couple of hours.

In contrast to IRC, modern chat systems keep chat history, have usable notification systems, and tend to be much more accessible.

So, if RocketChat is problematic, I hope that MacPorts will consider another modern system.

Uh, this got lost in my backlog for way too long. At this point we might deploy it from scratch again. Is RocketChat still desirable? If so, I'd need some time with a MacPorts admin so that we can set up the GitHub login.

Maybe not RocketChat specifically, but some sort of modern chatting platform that's newer than IRC. Preferably one of the ones that matterbridge lists as natively supported: https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge (which, yes, includes RocketChat)

I would rather continue with public hosted options instead of our own. On the Chat wiki page we already suggest to use Matrix.

That is fine by me! I'll drop the service so no-one gets confused.

The notice on that page that the Matrix and IRC channels aren't currently being bridged is a bit of a concern.
