I see that we're already building hugo with the extended tag:

Is there a feature missing right now in MacPorts hugo that indicates it's missing extended functionality?

yes. I was about to delete this ticket.

I've successfully installed the extended functionality. There was no note in the variants field or elsewhere that it was possible. A very simple change will help others. I am happy.
