I want to say that in ​https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/19054/files (4 months ago) I had picked this particular mirror because its HTTPS was working and did not have an invalid certificate like some of the other HTTPS mirrors.

Since this is not just a local DNS server (reported in several places, for instance Germany and Chile at least) the automatic lists from amcports should be updated and ema.uk.*.macports.org should be removed from both mirror and sites for binary and dist files.This is easier than any of us contacting our DNS servers for them to update their system, maybe?

Yes, either getting the ema.uk mirror working again or removing it from the list will be the resolution of this issue. We Cc'd the administrator of that server on this issue two weeks ago with the hope that they would respond but they have not. After being reminded of this issue when you filed yours, I used the form on their web site to try to contact them that way. So far, no response to that either.

If this were a case of any ordinary server that was part of a fetch group or listed in an individual port disappearing I wouldn't hesitate to remove it immediately. Servers come and go all the time. But this is a server that specifically requested to be an official MacPorts mirror (and a mirror of many other open source file collections, from what I can see) so I would like to be sure that they are really gone. If we don't hear from them soon I guess that's what we'll have to assume. We can always add them back again later if they reappear.

I am not sure what you are referring to when you mention reports from Germany and Chile but the only reason why the presence of a non-existent server in the list would cause any problem for you is if you have a misbehaving DNS server. It will be of assistance to you for other reasons, not just this one, if you resolve that. The resolution need not be to convince your DNS provider to fix their server. You can also choose to switch to a properly functioning DNS provider.

Sorry what I meant was I have a fiend in Chile who has the same issue and the probability that he and I rre going via the same DNS server is low, hence my comment on this may be a global issue for a site not existing anymore (at least under this name and IP). I solved my pb "locally" i.e. after the sync I locally edit the to files managing the archive and mirror sites so to remove the ema.uk's appears to work. I hope the managers of the site come back to you. Thanks.

I am developing a new port but cannot get past this issue regarding resolving the DNS for ema.uk.distfiles.macports.org. See below. How can I get around this so I can continue to develop my port.

It doesn't look like ema.uk is causing any more problems for you than every other mirror that doesn't have the file. I assume codeberg is where it's hosted, so you'll need to figure out why fetching from there is failing (error code will be in the log).

To save a little time when developing new ports, you can skip all the MacPorts mirrors when fetching by using the --no-mirrors option to port fetch.

@jmroot - Thanks Joshua. Yes, I am fetching the source for schilytools from codeberg. I have manually downloaded the source so I can debug the new port.

It will be interesting to see what happens when I submit a Pull Request for a new port (schilytools). Will the buildbots build it? Or will the port fail because of the DNS failure for ema.uk.distfiles.macports.org?

If the problem causing this port to fail to fetch from codeberg is resolved first, it will probably fetch successfully on CI. If it isn't, it probably won't. Either way it won't be because of ema.uk. It's the last mirror tried precisely because it isn't responding to pings, and if a download is attempted from it, it's because every other possibility has already been tried and failed.
