I asked on the macports IRC channel on Libera.Chat because I didn't want to build all the dependencies from source, yet the -s flag in the install command leads to exactly that:

Here's what user "jmr" wrote: "<jmr> an alternative is to run 'port destroot' instead of 'port install', that will build the specified port from source but install its dependencies normally"
