can anyone elaborate what the problem is? Ticket #19191 wasn't too revealing for me.

Well, to repeat, the reason to stay with 2.8.9 is that some dependencies, especially wxPython, do not build with 2.8.10. This is due to the odd convention of wxPython upstream to include wxWidgets in their releases with some improvements of their own rendering the dependency useless. I have complained about it with no result. I hope we have better luck (sic!) next time. But there is no guarantee having wxPython to play nice with the stable releases of wxWidgets;(

If wxPython uses some static, internal version of wxWidgets, why not let it do just that? Would dependents of wxPython continue to work with the separate wxWidgets port disabled and the internal version enabled?

In ticket #24350, I propose a new port "wxWidgets-python" to be the dependency for py*-wxpython with a version number that is in sync with that of the latest stable release of wxPython.
