While it's probably not related to this problem, you should run selfupdate to get the current version of MacPorts.

    11It seems my system with it's present settings is unable to install gtk2

    33sudo port install gtk2 +x11 +universal does install the following:

    2121however finally fails. Where am I going wrong?  I've uninstalled all ports and tried to reinstall to no avail. XCode 3.2.1 and X11(XQuartz 2.3.4 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple45)) are installed on my system.
