x48 @0.6.4_1 +roms: application does not open calculator

After installing XQuartz 2.8.5 when I try run x48 from the command line I see:

$ x48 -initialize -rom /opt/local/share/x48/gxrom-r
x48: using XShm extension.

Nothing else happens. I must <Control><C> to exit. I was expecting a window with x48 skin to open. I have used this app a long time ago and it was great. In some prior macOS it stopped working. I thought I would check again but it still seems to not work. Am I missing something?

My current system is MacBook Pro 2021 M1 (Apple Silicon) with macOS 14.3.1. This port built fine without errors.
